A home near a metro station is only useful for a particular commute if the service runs when the household needs it. First departures, last connections and the time needed to reach the platform all affect the real journey.

NMRC's published terminal timings checked for this article show first services at 6 am from Monday to Saturday and 8 am on Sunday, with last terminal departures at 10 pm. These are not departure times for every intermediate station, and temporary notices can change arrangements.

Work backwards from the complete journey

If your trip involves another metro line, a bus or a train, the last useful Aqua Line service may be earlier than its final departure. Allow for the interchange, walking time and the connection at the far end. Check the return journey as carefully as the morning trip.

Test the route at the right time

For a prospective home, travel at the time you would normally leave. Include the walk from the unit to the gate and the last-mile connection to the station. Weekend arrangements and a late shift can produce a different experience from a weekday visit arranged by a salesperson.

Keep a workable alternative

  • Confirm current operating notices before important journeys.
  • Check intermediate-station times, not only terminal timings.
  • Budget for occasional road travel outside operating hours.
  • Consider safe access after dark and during bad weather.

The bottom line

A commuting plan should fit the actual timetable and the whole household, with an alternative for journeys the metro cannot cover.
